When do you give up the day job? Perhaps never.

I am always astounded to find out how little some of the authors I rate highly earn annually from their work.

Freelance article writing, copy writing, what I call jobbing writing, has a better chance of paying the bills than literary or genre writing unless you are very lucky and good at self-promotion.

Priority 1 - Pay the Bills

The objective of our business is to provide a high quality product and reliable service for our customers. We hope you will enjoy visiting our web site and using our products as much as we enjoyed providing them for you.

Priority 2 - Build up a Strong Client List

Employees play an important role in any business. Here is where we get a chance to tell you a little about ourselves. We may talk about our families, interests, and what we do in our free time. We try to bring our passion for life to you through our business and this web site. We may even provide a link to our personal web site to tell you more about ourselves.

Priority 3 - Add a New Market Each Week

If you're building up your writing business alongside a full time job, you may only have time to add a new market each month. But it is important to do so.
You cannot rely on a few clients keeping you in work regularly. Always aim to have one more client than you have time to handle.
This stops you stressing out if one week an article is not accepted or a new editor takes over and your writing no longer fits his requirements.

Priority 4- Be flexible. Be nice.

Follow the guidelines. Remember the editor is always right. And it always helps to be nice to the telephonist on the switchboard and the editor's secretary.

Excessive paperwork? Don't knock it.

The more there is to read, the more chances you have to write.
